Yesterday afternoon, GeoWoodstock 2018 hit the magic number of 3,000 will attend logs. This is the first time a geocaching event in the united states has achieved this number. Groundspeak’s 2015 Geocaching Block Party, the final block party event, only received 2,213 will attend logs.
Geowoodstock has another six months to keep adding to this number. The event takes place in Cincinnati, Ohio on May 26, 2018. The Coney Island theme park is hosting the event. Attendees receive all-access bracelets for rides or water slides.
3,000 Will Attend Logs are A Critical Milestone.
Groundspeak’s Event Guidelines page provides guidelines for all events, including the newest Giga Event type. Events may not apply for Giga event status. Groundspeak evaluates Mega Events and upgrades the Mega icon to a Giga icon when a Mega event meets their criteria.
The most important requirement, indeed the definition of a Giga Event, is 5,000 or more geocachers logging their attendance. But the icon is awarded well before anyone attends the event. 3,000 Will Attend logs is the key that unlocks that part of the requirements. Guideline 9 of the general Giga Event guidelines reads:
When events reach 3000 Will Attend logs Groundspeak considers them for Giga-Event status. This number reflects an event’s high probability to attract 5000+ Attended logs during the event.
Will GeoWoodstock 2018 be a Giga Event?
So, given the 3,000 will attends logs, does this mean GWS2018 guaranteed Giga Event status? Well, not exactly.
There are 16 requirements listed in the Guidelines for Giga Events. Nearly all of these are clear and straightforward. You can go down the line and easily tick them off. A couple of them, though basically say it is at Groundspeak’s discretion.
Still, the event has a lot going for it. GeoWoodstock has the highest attendance of the US events second only to the discontinued Geocaching Block Party. Even with that past success Jesse Tuttle, the team at AFK, and the leadership of the OKIC have nearly doubled the will attends of the most successful past GeoWoodstock.
I think the odds of Groundspeak awarding the coveted icon to GeoWodstock as America’s first Giga are pretty good. It’s all up to Groundspeak now. But there are no signs that the GWS team is letting up at all.
